Chinese Media Takes Aim at Australia’s New ‘Hawkish’ Defence Minister

Newly appointed Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton has rejected a state-controlled Chinese newspaper’s claim that he is a “hawkish” and “extreme populist” political leader with a “strong tendency of racism.” The Chinese regime mouthpiece, The Global Times, made the claim in an editorial but Dutton asserted that his main objective as defence minister is to protect Australia’s sovereignty and national interests. “With Dutton being the defence minister, Australia will take further actions to cooperate with the United States to stir up South China Sea issues,” the editorial piece said.
